From 22nd November, eleven artist-designed chandeliers will light up St Mark's Square, as part of Murano Illumina il Mondo
Murano glass is returning to illuminate St Mark’s Square with the second edition of Murano Illumina il Mondo (Murano Lights Up The World). Organised and promoted by The Venice Glass Week and Comune di Venezia, the project will shine a spotlight on the island of Murano via the winning alliance between glass and contemporary art.
For the entire winter period, from 22nd November 2024 to 4th March 2025, eleven magnificent chandeliers created by eleven internationally renowned artists, including Joseph Kosuth, Philippe Starck and Kengo Kuma, in collaboration with some of Murano’s most prestigious glass furnaces, will be lit every evening at dusk along the vaults of the Procuratie Vecchie, transforming St. Mark’s Square into a spectacular open-air gallery.
The participating artists and designers were invited to reinterpret an everyday object, the chandelier, using both traditional and modern glassmaking techniques. Their designs were realised by some of Murano’s most talented glass masters, renowned for their remarkable technical skills, centuries-old techniques and innovative experimentation.
The illumination of the chandeliers will take place on Friday 22nd November at 5pm in St Mark's Square.
