Carlo Scarpa 1928 Venin with murrines

Vase made of Lattimo glass with concentric murrine glass rings; rim made of green glass.

Carlo Scarpa began working at Venini in 1928 and gradually adapted both the forms and the materials used, opting for more opaque variations with subtle decorative elements. As is often the case, this innovation, which seemed to betray the characteristic transparency and lightness of Murano glass, was not welcomed by all critics. However, recognition and appreciation also came from highly qualified observers. Among many others, Gio Ponti praised the simple, elementary forms of Venini’s latest designs, which made the quality of Scarpa’s glass even more appealing.
